Gaffney, SC - Cherokee Charter Academy was honored last week with a formal Senate Resolution presented by State Senator Harvey Peeler, recognizing the school’s outstanding achievements and continued impact on education in Cherokee Charter Academy.

A longtime supporter of Cherokee Charter Academy and a proud member of the Gaffney community, Senator Peeler visited the campus to personally deliver the motion of honor. The resolution specifically recognizes Cherokee Charter Academy for being named a Silver School of Distinction for both its Elementary and Middle Schools and for earning national recognition as a Top Charter School in the Nation by Education Insider Magazine.

While these two honors were the central focus of the resolution, the recognition also reflects a broader record of excellence that Cherokee Charter Academy has built since opening its doors in the 2020-21 school year as the first public charter school in Cherokee County. Within just three years, the school became the top-performing school in the county, setting a new standard for student achievement in rural South Carolina.

Cherokee Charter Academy’s continued success is demonstrated through a number of additional accomplishments, including:

  • Receiving the 2023 Innovative Academic Excellence Award from the Public Charter School Alliance of South Carolina (2023)

  • Expanding to include 4k programming to better serve young learners (2022-23)

  • Announcing the addition of a high school program to extend its academic mission (2024)

  • Earning prior Schools of Distinction honors from the Charter Institute at Erskine, including Gold for Middle School and Bronze for Elementary (2024)

  • Being named Best School in Cherokee County by readers of the Gaffney Ledger (2025)

  • Launching partnerships with institutions such as Sherman College and Spartanburg Community College (2025)

  • Introducing initiatives like a summer Literacy Program to support student growth across the community (2025)

“These accomplishments reflect the dedication of our students, faculty, staff, and families,” said Dr. Lindsay Walker, Principal of Cherokee Charter Academy. “We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition. Senator Peeler’s continued support means so much to our school, and this resolution highlights not only our recent honors but the strong foundation we continue to build for our students and community.”

The Senate Resolution serves as both recognition of Cherokee Charter Academy's academic achievements and a celebration of its sustained excellence, innovation, and commitment to serving students and families in Cherokee County.
