The Board of Libertas Academy Colleton, the first tuition-free public charter school in Colleton County, has unanimously finalized a $15.5M partnership with Performance Charter School Development LLC to build its permanent campus at 301 Smith Street, Walterboro, SC 29488. Construction will begin in November, with the new facility set to open in August 2026 to students in grades PK4 through 6th, expanding access to high-quality public education in the Lowcountry.

Now in its first year of operation, Libertas Academy Colleton currently serves students in PK4 through 4th grade through a facility partnership with Faith Walterboro, offering a rigorous, student-centered classical education. The move to a state-of-the-art, purpose-built campus represents a major milestone for the school, its families, and the broader Colleton County community.

“This new facility allows us to better serve our families and fulfill our mission of developing the next generation of American citizens,” said Destiny Grant, School Director of Libertas Academy Colleton. “Our commitment to high academic standards, daily enrichment, and student-first instruction is what defines The Libertas Way, and we are thrilled to continue that work in a permanent home right here in Walterboro.”

Libertas Academy Colleton is authorized by the Charter Institute at Erskine and managed by Tutelage School Solutions, South Carolina’s fastest-growing charter school network. The school offers instruction in math, reading, and science, paired with daily physical education, music or art, and a no-homework policy.

“This campus represents our commitment to expanding access to a high-quality education for more families,” said Keith Coones, Board Chair of Libertas Academies. “With a permanent location, Libertas Academy Colleton can deepen its impact, serve more students, and continue to deliver a strong educational experience. It is important to note that this project will be completed at no cost to local taxpayers. Public charter schools receive funding solely through state and federal sources, making this a major win for our students and our community.”

Libertas Academy Colleton is still accepting applications for the 2025-2026 school year for students in grades PK4 through 4th. Families who enroll now will secure their seat at the permanent campus when it opens in August 2026.

Enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year will begin in January 2026 for students in grades PK4 through 6th. With limited seats available and a waiting list anticipated, families are encouraged to enroll early.
